Report By Frank "T" Thomas On August 2007 Flooding of Church
"Dr. Paul Calmes (CBF of Oklahoma Missions Coordinator), Neal Hardin (member at NorthHaven Church, Norman) and I have just returned from Chickasha. Our new Cowboy Country Church down there is a real mess.
On Sunday, when the remnants of Tropical Storm Erin blew through (complete with hurricane eye!), the flooding got really bad in places like Kingfisher and Chickasha.
Pastor Lynn Walker drove out to where the Cowboy church is located and found the river and creek that border their property had now disappeared and a swift moving lake was left in its place!
Pastor Lynn jumped in, waded and swam in chest-deep water the 50 yards or so to their building. By then, it was inundated with two feet of mud and water. He worked to save guitars and other musical instruments andsound equipment but much was lost. By the time he waded back to the elevated highway, a crowd had gathered. Before exiting the water, he asked the impromptu "congregation" in a loud voice: "We've got plenty of water here. Who needs to be baptized?"
The bottom line is that the older building which was originally a showroom and workshop, is a total loss. Mold is already in the walls and the stench isoverpowering. The church will meet outside tonight and perhaps on Sunday.
We (CBF of Oklahoma) and FBC of Oklahoma City are trying to move them to another location as soon as possible. They had only recently moved to this new location and had held just one service there. Needless to say they are very discouraged.
They have lost between $6K and $10K in furnishings, sound equipment, musical instruments, etc., plus their first and last months' rent--over $2K. Three CBFO churches have kicked in some funds and equipment and CBFO will help them also."
